Tandem was engaged to complete major refurbishment works on the most iconic of Carey buildings – the William Carey Chapel. Included in this contract was the refurbishment of the Arts Building, a new Gallery Building and a substantial landscaping project. Stage 1 works commenced at the end of 2019 and included the conversion of an early 20th century brick building into a modern teaching and Art Studio facility; as promised Tandem delivered this part of the project in time for the start of the 2020 school year. This staged handover preceded the delivery of a new and modern Gallery Building, custom designed to maximise the art display area and natural light, whilst solving the need for a new DDA entry and ramp. The Chapel and landscaping components (Stage 2) have run concurrently and were completed at the end of July 2020. These elements comprised of a bespoke new narthex, sensitively integrated within the fabric of the existing chapel building and the reconfiguration of the chapel itself, which has included the deconstruction of walls to increase natural light, removal of the existing mezzanine and stage and a new lighting design to celebrate a lofty 14 meter high ceiling apex. Refreshed with modern finishes, a new stage, DDA lift, underfloor heating and a state of the art audio visual system, underpins the William Carey Chapel as the focal point of the Kew campus. A new 60 meter stone, steel and concrete fence frames and secures the Daniell Place boundary. This is a unique project for the school, Tandem were proud to successfully complete and honour a special part of Carey’s history, as well as building upon the school’s future.
